Henley on the Rocks 2017

6/6/2017

Twenty-nine athletes registered for six events at this year's Henley on the Trinity, but due to the combination of lightning, high water, and debris on the course resulted in scratching the on-water racing; instead 20 of rowers competed in ergo poker. Competitors ran 1000m pieces in five events, converted the resulting times into playing cards and awarded this year’s Henley pint glasses based on poker hands. As you’ll see, smart rowers pulled scores with lots of ones while the others sawed away with virtually no strategy.
Results:
Mixed Double won by Ed Golding and Kaira Lay whose scores of 3:11.2 and 4:11.9 made a hand of 4 aces and a nine.

Women’s Double won by Gina Tomaseski and Kim Wilson whose scores of 4:12 and 4:11 made a full house of aces over fours.

Men’s Double won by Simon Borchelt and Matt Knifton whose scores of 3:11.3 and 3:11.6 made a hand of four aces and a six. Not content with winning the double, Matt and Simon also won the pose-off.

Women’s Single was a dead heat tie between Jessica Rogers and Kim Elting where each produced matching four of a kind hands. The re-row was a 100m dash for score with Kim beating Jessica by .1s to win the glass.

Men’s Single was won by Matt Knifton who created another four of a kind hand of aces.

Thanks, everyone, for your good-humored response to lousy weather and please, come back in late spring 2018 for our next go at Henley style racing.
